Toybox Heroes
was my final team game production at the
Guildhall at SMU. It is a
one-on-one fighting game in the style of
Super Smash Bros. or Power Stone,
featuring six-inch-tall action figures as its
combatants. I served as the game
designer on this team game project and was
responsible for all concept and gameplay
decisions, as well as for source code written in the
Source SDK. I was selected for this
position by the Guildhall faculty based on a
concept document that I wrote in accordance with
a given set of requirements.
The primary
requirement for this project was to create a
"console-style" game in the Half-Life 2
engine. This included supporting DualShock
2 controllers and creating a camera that behaves
synonymously on all players' screens, so that
the players may all view the game on the same
screen. The levels were to be designed as
sets or vignettes, conducive to keeping all
players in view at once. Although our
requirements were for only two players, we chose
to support up to four players, as we felt the
game was more fun when the action was more
crowded and chaotic.
